: This is only a speculation, but I would suggest that you:

: 1) have the cutoff values list in ascending order
: 2) don't overlap or omit (leave gaps in the values of) any cutoff values
: 3) just supply the end range value

: The program may not behave as one would expect, if you do.

:
: I would suggest re-arranging your values (and colors if need be):

: Number of Hits State Color
: (HEX code)
: No Hits
: Less than First Cutoff:
: Cutoff #1: 7 – turquoise
: Cutoff #2: 34 - bright blue
: Cutoff #3: 50 - bright green
: Cutoff #4: 316 - red

:
: Also, as I have mentioned on my
: WG FOG 50 State Map Instructions: Search for 'Points of interest:'

: 5) The default cutoff values are recalculated. I wish the values would stay the same as I had last left them (the previous time I updated my map image). [This may be addressed in the future. I make no promises. *smile*]
: 6)

: The main reason why I created that page was because there appear to be some inconsistencies in the map generation program, and new Georgers often stumble over them often. I was hoping that if new Georger read the page carefully, they may avoid some of the same pitfalls that we have discovered. Sorry, the page is not a concise as it could be, but there are some really informative items located on that page. *smile*

: Thanks again,

: : I really don't know how this all got changed, but originally I had a map with the above colors. Oh me again.

: : : Hope these colors work out the way I want, otherwise I'll be embarressed :-)

: : : Your default breakpoints didn't come through but you and I are pretty close in Total Hits. I have 583 vs your 524. My default number are 40, 80, 120, and 160. I would assume that yours are pretty close. If I apply my defaults to your numbers I would every state with hits in this color except for Illinois and Oklahoma. I don't remember what color Illinois was but the rest match what I remember your map looked like a couple of days ago. I still think that you must have accidently generated that map with the default breakpoints. I like the challenge but I can think of no other explanation. Maybe someone else who might be following this thread can.

: : : There is something very strange about your current color scheme. Your list of states and hits goes from Washington with 1 Hit to Florida with 2 Hits. There is normally a color in between but that is assigned to Massachusetts and Texas with 13 Hits. Those states are in the middle of the Blue colored states. That I can't explain. Can you shed any light on it?

: : : : : By "breakpoints" I meant the numbers in the boxes labeled Cutoff #1, Cutoff #2, #3, and #4. They control the number of Hits where the colors change. When you first bring up the Hits By State page there are numbers in the boxes. That's what I meant by "defaults". You probably change then to different values before generating the map?

: : : : :
: : : : : Keep this in mind. When you look at the map, either in your profile or on the map generation page (they are the same thing), your browser places a copy of the map in it's "cache", probably on your disk but possibly in memory. When you look at the map a second time the browser **may** display that stored image rather than downloading a new copy from the site (it saves time). Ergo, you may have actually changed the map by re-generating it with new colors or breakpoints but you may not see it because you are looking at a copy of the previous map. The usual remedy for this is to Right Click on the map and select Reload or Refresh (depending on your browser). Sometimes it may take a couple of attempts to get the new copy, but once usually does it. Caches can do strange things.

: : : : :
: : : : : Without knowing your distribution of hits by state it is difficult to tell what is going on but here's my guess. Because you probably have a large number of hits in OK compared to any other state I would guess that the version of the map with OK in red and everything else gray or the darker green was generated using the default breakpoints. They don't work for most people. I get a somewhat similar map when I use the default values. The map currently in your profile probably has values that you entered?

: : : : : I was asking for your numbers to see if my assumption was correct. In which case I **might** be able to tell what was going on with your map.

: : : :
: : : : :
: : : : : : I did try to change the colors but they remained the same. Thanks jj

: : : : :
: : : : : : : let me ask to be sure. I see that the colors are back in your map so I assume that you did re-generate the map?

: : : : : : : Are those default breakpoint settings or to you enter your own? What are your defaults and what did you change them to?

: : : : : :
: : : : : : : : : : I checked my profile and the colors have all changed again. What am I doing wrong? Thanks & Happy Days jj

: : : : : : : : :
: : : : : : : : : If so do you use the default breakpoints for the various colors? If not you have to be sure to reset them to your desired value **before** you re-generate it. Same if you change the default colors. The system does not remember your previous selections.
