I too was thinking about running a little contest of sorts and offering free FOG or even something from the George Store so I just spent half an hour searching through all the old forum posts and can't find any direct statement from Hank as to what is or isn't allowed.
Based on what I read above I assumed contests were ok as long as they didn't involve prizes offered in user notes. Basically as you stated it could cause confusion with new Gerogers.
After searching a little I ran across Dr. Bobs contest
http://www.wheresgeorge.com/user_profile_popup.php3?ukey=WGEFHEV_78Rsc
in which the contest is mentioned in the bills user note and the prize is offered in his profile. As fas as I can tell this isn't much different then what JJ did above however no one seems to have said anything about it.
After some more searching I found another topic on contest ideas
http://www.wheresgeorge.com/pf_main3/messages/1030324313_3919.html
in which Hank basically states that if he doesn't do everything legally he could end up in trouble for running a contest.
This leads me to believe that Hank personally, as administrator of the web site can't really do anything w/o being extremely cautious.
So what does all of this mean?
I really don't know, I'm hoping that Hank will repost here and tell us exactly what is and isn't allowed as far as contest go.
I may seem a little excessive here but I had a cool little contest idea that I thought people would enjoy but I don't want to cause any trouble for Hank and the Where's George community.
