Subject: Operation Area 51 - some observations...

I've seen some interesting patterns in the State-To-State tables on the Area 51 web site. Here are a few...

1. Not only does Massachusetts have the most hits, it has the highest # of (ok, let's see if can describe this...) different states from which hits came. In other words, if you look at a state, then look at its hits and see how many other states the bills originated in, Massuchesetts has the highest # (would anyone have any idea of a better, simpler way to describe this kind of stat?). Massachusetts has hits on bills from 8 other states (+ Mass. itself), tied with California for the most (California also has the 2nd highest # of total hits). Now, I can understand if a lot of bills from a lot of different states go to California - it is a big state. However, Massuchusetts has me confused. How is it that so many bills from several other states have gone to Massachusetts? The bills entered in Massuchesetts have "only" 9 total hits, 8 of which are in Massuchesetts itself. Personally, I think it's appropriate that state with the most hits is where WG is run, but it sure seems strange.

2. California, like MA, has hits on bills from 8 other different states. There are several multiples - for example, 2 CA hits have come from Hawaii, 2 from Hawaii and 3 from Idaho. All of these are easily explainable, considering the California is directly south of Alaska, east of Hawaii, and borders on Idado. There are a couple others - 1 bill has come from Kentucky, and another from New York, which does not seem that unlikely. However, what has me stumped are the 2 bills that have come from Missouri to be hit in California. If it were just one, that would seem like just more random chance. However, 2 seems to indicate some kind of pattern, especially considering that Missouri is halfway across the country from CA.

3. Still no hits in West Virginia, Nevada or Delaware. However, there HAVE been 4 hits on bills entered in Delaware, 2 from Nevada, and 6 from West Virginia.

4. Alaska holds the record for highest # of states its bills have been hit in. Bills initially entered in Alaska have been hit in 6 other states (+ Alaska itself). Maybe it's just me, but I would think its sheer size would cauee most bills there to stay in-state.

Maybe when I finish updating the County Hit Map, someone might be able to overlay a similar-sized interstate map that might help explain some of this.

Also, I think it would be nice if the Local Time on bill reports also showed whether or not Daylight Savings Time applies, since several areas of the country don't use it (you reading this Hank? :-) ).
