In Reply to: Re: Hank, Once the bill entry calculates the 'entry count' *variable*, does it become a *constant* and no longer is dynamic? (more) posted by Beaker on August 16, 2002 at 2:16 AM:

We think Hans' alter-ego is too anal retentive. He may never, ever have a bill entry deleted and thus never have the count incorrect. But the mere possibly would evoke WG nightmares, reducing sleep, pondering…, "Damn, I need to go back update all those bill entry counts on the notes". *laugh*

Notice how I referred to Hans in the third person? Obviously, it's getting rather late.

I prefer dynamic variables. Oh, well *sigh*

Thanks again,
HMG in MAss,

: : The reason I ask is:

: : Let's say a user enters all these notes with the 'entry count' variable, and then later a bill entry is deleted. All the bills from the 'deleted bills' to the 'next bill entered' will have incorrect bill entry numbers on their respective notes.

: : Well, at least this should occur much less than if we had a 'hit entry count'.

: : I am correct with this assumption? Please correct me if I am wrong.

: : I guess the preferred solution would be to allow the 'entry count' *variable* to be entered directly into the notes and dynamically access the user's 'bill entry counter' each time the bill report is accessed. Perhaps, this is too much data access overhead?

: If you'll notice, when you actually go to enter a bill it doesn't say @CNT@, it simply has the number. At that point, it's just a constant, just part of the note, as if you had typed it yourself. All that the variable does is take your *current* bills entered # and display that in the note, so it will not update automatically. As for having bill number variable be part of the note itself, that (along with hit # variable) has already been suggested by me, and Hank said it is simply waaaaay too hard to do.

: : I post this here, so that Georgers using this new feature might be aware of its behavior.
: : Hank, feel free to tell me to shut up now. *smile* - Just be nice… You don't want to hurt my alter-ego's feelings *Yuk, Yuk, Yuk*
: : Good Luck & Happy Georgering!

: : :
: : : It is a "Default User Note", stored on your User Preferences Page. It is automatically inserted into the bill notes area when you enter new bills.

: : : And IN ADDITION, there is one variable available, that if you include it in your Default User Note, it will automatically return your total bill count+1, so your default user note can be:

: : : "This is bill #@CNT@ I've entered.", and your total bill count is 4,332 - your user note will appear as "This is bill #4,333 I've entered." when you enter new bills. And it auto-increments as you enter further bills.

: : : NOTE: YOU CAN'T JUST ENTER @CNT@ in the bill user note section, it can only appear in your Default Note in User Preferences (for Friends of George only).
