: : Ugh! An image menu! That makes the site virtually unnavigable unless I turn images on in my browser. I always keep images off to speed loading, and I don't appreciate the growing number of sites that aren't set up to allow such use. No offense, Hank, but that's very bad form....

I have to agree some. Backward compatibility is paramount. A good test is to fire up your site in Lynx and see how usuable it is.

: i turned images off and the button text was still there. just george went away. is this a browser difference? i am using ns 4.75. what browser are you using?

That's because the images were already in your cache. The "automatically load images" option is exactly that, not "display images". Once the image is in your cache Netscape will always display it. Not only that, it will always try to verify it against the network. If you delete all the .gif files from your cache directory you should see it as Excelsior sees it. If no local copy exists, Netscape will ignore the image in the page.

: a solution may be to put in 'alternate text' (alt="text") so that text will show, even without images. i am not sure that that can be done in java, though.

A java script can be done to achieve the same effect as Hank's images with text only. Not sure if that is any more "pure" than using images. :)
