View Full Version : Dead Pool 2008
Bill Stamper

Dead Pool 2008 begins Monday December 17th...
Pick the ten different people you think will expire in the year 2008. It is customary to pick people who are relatively well known. So please don't say Grandma Ruby or my boss John Smith.
One list of ten guesses per person allowed. Your score at the end of the year is calculated by taking each person's age who died that you guessed, and subtracting it from 100. If you pick someone over 100, then you get no points for that person. The person who gets the highest total score wins 3 months of FoG/FoW from yours truly Bill Stamper. (that's an added value of $3 over the past year's prize)
Your PM to me must be sent by the stroke of midnight on New Years Eve/Day. Any PMs after midnight east coat time will not count. You may put an alternate in your PM in case one of your picks dies between the time you PM me and 1/1. However it isn't required because you will have a chance to submit a replacement if one of your picks dies before 1/1, as long as you PM me with it by 1/1.
Ties will be resolved first by most number of picks dying in a roster, and then second by the earliest roster turned in if the first tie-breaker doesn't decide it.
The winner will be announced on January 1, 2009.
Deaths will be counted only in the case of "confirmable" deaths during the calendar year (aka "The Fidel Castro Rule").
Picks must be human. (aka "The Lassie Rule")
All picks must have some element of celebrity, fame, or political relevance so that an announcement will be mentioned in some credible news source.
None may be currently under a state-mandated death sentence, nor may their celebrity or fame be based primarily on their moribund state or terminal illness. (aka "The Terry Schiavo Rule")
The only people not allowed this year: None (other than people who fall under the Terry Schiavo rule) - everyone else is fair game including Ariel Sharon and Fidel Castro. Just remember that if a person dies but it isn't confirmed until after 12/31/08, it doesn't count.
Please give me and Roger until Monday to exchange our lists before PMing me with your list. If you feel the need to post your list to the thread please wait until 1/1.
One last thing. Only submit your guesses by PM, not anon-email. It is too much of a hassle to put the list together with some of both.

Don't pick ten people in their 20's or early 30's no matter their propensity to bad behaviour. Just personal advice from me.

Insider information is the key to success so sharing is like giving up points. You have to pick names based on what you have heard from the news, internet, and radio. A radio station I listen two here in Omaha has some competitors doing this - http://www.tntradioempire.com/
You have to pick some people who are older, lived well or exciting lives, people you have heard have cancer, or the people living on the edge, (Anna Nicole Smith types).
I must admit, I really felt bad earlier this year when Luciano Pavarotti passed away. I knew he was sick for a long time but me getting points from his death made me feel bad. and it did change my 2008 picks slightly.

I'm in, too, but I'll wait until almost last minute to send in my picks, since they (those on my 2008 list) has done such a job at dying in 2007, so far.
It's a hard job to pick people. Last year, I felt worst about putting Pavarotti on my list, knowing that he was ill, and that he was one of the most beloved people in the world. OTOH, I picked Paul Harvey, who I am convinced is already dead and just propped up with someone's hand up his back and acting as ventriloquist. :p
Am still on the fence about Castro. Who knows?
And so far I have been unable to come up with anyone with the life-style of Anna Nicole Smith, bless her doped-up little soul.

All my 2007 picks are still alive (except Gerald Ford who died right after I picked him at the end of 2006 so I had to replace him) so unless the asteroid hits, I'm sure many of the elderly rich and famous are hoping I'll name them. :D Anyway, I'm in. Picks forthcoming shortly.

Queen Elizabeth II becomes Britain's oldest monarch
by Katherine Haddon
LONDON (AFP) - Queen Elizabeth II was set to become Britain's oldest monarch Thursday, overtaking her great-great grandmother Queen Victoria, although in discreet royal fashion no events were planned to mark the record.

"This is just another normal working day for the queen," a royal spokeswoman told AFP, adding that the 81-year-old was spending the day in Buckingham Palace dealing with routine paperwork and some Christmas correspondence.
"There's nothing the queen is doing to mark the occasion," she added.
Victoria died in 1901 aged 81 years and 243 days. Elizabeth was to pass Victoria's record at around 5:00 pm Thursday -- taking into account times of birth and death, according to Buckingham Palace.
She is the world's second-longest serving monarch alive, after Thai King Bhumibol Adulyadej. She has outlasted 11 prime ministers -- the first was Sir Winston Churchill -- and is the first to have a prime minister, Tony Blair, born during her reign.
Victoria will retain the record for longest-serving monarch ever for some time, though: she ruled Britain and its empire for nearly 64 years. Elizabeth will surpass if that she is still on the throne on September 9, 2015.
Coincidentally, the youngest member of the British royal family, the newborn son of the queen's youngest child, Prince Edward, left hospital Thursday following his birth Monday.
Despite her age, the queen shows little sign of slowing down -- last month, she and her husband Prince Philip visited Uganda for the Commonwealth Heads of Government meeting and she carried out 425 official engagements last year.
"Even allowing for the improvement in medicine since Victoria, it is remarkable," Peter Hennessy, professor of contemporary British history at Queen Mary's college, University of London, told the Daily Telegraph.
Any sign of ageing is pored over by the media, such as when she appeared at an official engagement this week with a large bruise on her neck. Royal officials said it was the result of a knock and was "nothing to worry about".
Notwithstanding her gruelling timetable and the high respect which most Britons have for her, there are signs that the monarchy is starting to think about what will happen when she dies, even if she is currently in good health.
Heir to the throne Prince Charles went to Uganda last month with his parents, attending his first Commonwealth leaders summit outside Britain.
The Daily Telegraph newspaper quoted an unnamed senior Commonwealth source at the time as saying the question of whether Charles would become head of the 53-nation body was being actively considered.
Charles's own position in Britain has strengthened thanks to the successful integration of his second wife Camilla -- with whom he had an affair during his marriage to the late princess Diana -- into the royal family.
Thanks to her low-key charity work and seemingly warm relations with stepsons princes William and Harry, public opinion of the woman Diana dubbed "the Rottweiler" is beginning to thaw.
Some 28 percent of people say they want her as queen when Charles takes over, compared to just seven percent in 2005.
Insiders including Elizabeth's cousin Margaret Rhodes say it is highly unlikely she will step down early -- the abdication of Edward VIII in 1936, which forced her father to take over, is a painful chapter in royal history.
"Abdication I don't think is an issue, or something that's even in consideration to the Queen," said Robert Jobson, a journalist and author of books on the royal family.
So while the queen could still, in the words of the national anthem, be "long to reign over us", the royal family seems determined to make sure that when the inevitable does finally happen, the transition is smooth. Buckingham Palace said the Queen's next public engagement is on Christmas Day (December 25), when she will attend a church service on her Sandringham country estate in the county of Norfolk, eastern England.

Started with about 45 folks on the list, and thanks to a pair of scissors, a paper bag and the capricious randomness of the universe, I whittled down my list to 10 and two alternates. PM sent a few moments ago, so I'm committed now.
I am not a big follower of the Celebrity Malady scene, so I just tried to pick old folks that few others might pick. All well known, but likely to elicit an "Oh, yeah, I remember them" or "they're still alive?" response.
How about you guys? Don't give away all your secrets, but give us a hint how you picked your geezers.

The earlist birth year of my picks was 1915 (92 yrs old) and the latest was 1940 (67 yo). Most were 1920's and a few 1930's.
My strategy last year, despite being theoretically reasonable, was disappointing. People in their twenties just seen too resiliant despite their own best efforts toward Darwin Awards.

I was tossing around a few names, and then during my grandfather's birthday party, I was reading the gossip magazines (Enquirer, People, etc.) I got some other ideas. Problem is, I already sent in my list but we'll be back there on Christmas, and those magazines might give me some other ideas.
My one rule is that I won't pick anyone just because I dislike them. So while there's always a reasonable chance of a somewhat famous racer being killed in an event during the year, I have no way of guessing who, and don't wish that upon anyone, even if they are a racer I don't care for. Same for country musicians, that although I could probably make a themed list like that, I won't just name one at random. Everyone on my list I feel does have a reasonable chance of not making it through they year.

Which is why my list is under construction until the last day! Last year we lost Gerald Ford the day after Christmas, and a number of people were doing last--minute revisions.
Besides, I've been running a list of potential 2008 candidates all year, and I've already lost a number of them. Like I said, my list is "under construction".

Very interesting lists! Congrats to everyone on some great choices, many of which I wish I had made!
A technical question.... I guess if they find Steve Fawcett, there will be an answer, but what happens with people declared "legally dead"? Is it when they disappear, or when the court ruling is, or are they never truly eligible for the game?
Just curious.

Last year I decided to pick only people that go by 1 name.
This year I decided to pick only people that go by 3 names, intials counted as a name.
This year I forgot about it till the last minute, so I was bouncing ideas of my step-brother, step-mother, and my step-brother's friend.
I got a few names off them, but that didn't last long, so I hit Wikipedia.
I ended up looking at an episode list of the Simpsons with celebrities that have voiced for that episode.
The Simpsons list gave me most of my names.

what if someone picked Jamie Lynn Spears' baby? would it count because the baby has been conceived or would it not count because the baby has not yet been born?Since the rules don't expressly prohibit picking fetuses, it would count and be 100 points for the one who is so lucky. The rules do state, "All picks must have some element of celebrity, fame, or political relevance so that an announcement will be mentioned in some credible news source." The miscarriage or death of a celebrity's newborn would probably get mentioned in a credible news source, so it meets that criterion.
I guess Bill Stamper could decide to disallow those who are not yet born. One way he can do that is by making entries have a specific name and not allowing entries that aren't named before they die. For example, if you put "Jamie Lynn Spears's baby" on your list for 2008, and she has twins, and one of them dies, then you would have a case for getting 100 points. (Or 200 or even 300 if she has multiples and more than one dies.) However, by requiring you to name the baby, then if she miscarries, then you cannot count the baby since you did not know the baby's name before the death.

Part of my point is that picking someone with this TYPE of illness isn't likely to be fruitful since the disease will not shorten life span. The odds are no better than picking someone with a toothache. These disorders are not life threatening or fatal.

Well here is an explanation of my picks many have some touch of cancer, drugs and age. Throw in the celebrity train wreck (Anna Nicole Smith ) type pick and here is what I ended up with.
Much of this came from Wicipedia and things I have heard from the radio, and TV.
Sheikh Omar Abdel-Rahman serving a life sentence - medical authorities also discovered a tumor on his liver
Eunice Kennedy - Eunice has suffered several health setbacks in recent years, and on November 18, 2007, she was admitted to Massachusetts General Hospital where she remains today
Roy Richard Scheider The actor who killed Jaws - In 2004, Scheider was diagnosed with myeloma (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Myeloma), a cancer of the plasma cells, there is no cure for Myeloma, only treatment.
George Steinbrenner not much official - http://sports.aol.com/fanhouse/2007/08/02/george-steinbrenner-is-not-aging-well/
Sandra Kay Yow I struggled with this one, she is a marvelous lady who has fought breast cancer for years. In 2007, Yow received an ESPY award named after the late Jim Valvano for her perseverance in being able to continue to coach while battling cancer.
Farrah Fawcett - to travel to Germany for an experimental cancer treatment
Fidel Castro many health issues here
Billy Graham - ecently revealed that he is suffering from prostate cancer.
Jack Kevorkian - Kevorkian was released from prison on June 1, 2007, on parole due to his failing health.
Amy Waterhouse My train wreck pick - drugs are a bad bad thing.
Some of the names I had on my list of alternates. In no particular order:
Kirk Douglas saw him recently on some show, does not look good
Bob Ubanks mentioned on the radio for not being healthy
Tatum Fisher - Derek Fisher's daughter not sure if she was famous enough and I did not want to pick a sick child, she is less then 2 years old. She has retinoblastoma a type of cancer in her eyes.
Benazir Bhutto I had her on my draft board, would have I picked her on my final list?
Jenna Jamason has looked terrible lately, I have been a big fan of her body of work

IMO I would think a birth certificate needs to be issued for the person and a death certificate. If Jamie Lynn Spears were to miscarry (not as likely now she is in her 2nd trimester) a death certificate would not be issued for the fetus.

With passage of SB850, the "Missing Angels Act" California now issues "certificates of stillbirth" in cases where a live birth did not take place, so there is no birth certificate or death certificate.

This rule used to be the "Osama bin Laden" rule but maybe should be renamed the "Steve Fawcett" rule. The person needs to be confirmed dead within the year of the contest to get points. So if you picked Osama bin Laden this year, but they find his body and determine that he died in 2005 there will be no points. Furthermore, if you picked Steve Fawcett in 2007 but it isn't confirmed that he is dead until sometime this year then you get no points in 2007 even if he died last year, because he needed to be positively confirmed dead by 12/31/07 to count. Generally speaking, there needs to be a body. Or in the case of something like the Space Shuttle Columbia tragedy, knowing someone was on board is sufficient.

Hypothetical, because I don't think anyone had him on their list. And using the same example, is the a rule for "legally presumed dead"?
Just curious.

I was very tempted to but Britney on there but couldn't bring myself to benefit from that doomed chicklet. Her Mama is beyond belief -- one ruined daughter and she's selling the other's sad pregnancy tale to the magazines. Unbelievable.

ya, I noticed some of the pictures of her were titled "heroin scars" with circles & arrows pointing to areas... then I saw the bloody pics of her boyfriend & her too. I had to keep in mind my family friendly status presently ~ she looks pretty hot in some pics. It's a shame she's on that distructive path. Apparently she's pretty talented, can't say that I've heard anything that I saw in her bio. I like R & B & various musics, I might've heard something, and just don't realize it yet.

Instead of it being "knowing someone was on board is sufficient", shouldn't it be that a death certificate is issued?

When I lived in Hollywood I never liked Johnny Grant. He would do anything to hang out and be on camera with the celebraties. He thought he was cool by just hanging out with movie stars. He had the Kato Kaylan syndrome where if you hang out with moviestars you can live the life of a star without having to work for it. A friend & I even ran a campaign to have him impeached as Honorary Mayor. It never got anywhere because people kept trying to tell me I couldn't impeach someone who was an honorary mayor. I feel kinda sad he had to die to get him out of office, but am relieved he's finally gone, now we can get someone else to be the honorary mayor of Hollywood.

I just heard on NPR that Heath Ledger (the actor) was found dead in Manhattan. Very sad -- a young man. There's only a little info on his Wikipedia page as yet:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heath_Ledger
I don't think any of us had him on our lists, though.
Granted there was the break up with his baby's momma, but he seemed to be doing well. Shunned the limelight and really seemed to act for the love of acting and not fame. I never heard of any drug problems. This was very shocking.
http://www.cnn.com/2008/SHOWBIZ/Movies/01/22/heath.ledger.dead/index.html
And from TMZ:
TMZ has learned that 2006 Academy Award nominee Heath Ledger has died in NY.
He was found dead in his bed in one of his residences in Soho by his housekeeper at 3:35 PM ET today. Law enforcement sources tell TMZ they believe it was not a crime, adding pills were found near his body.
The 28-year-old actor has a two year old daughter with former fiancee Michelle Williams -- they separated in September, 2007. He plays the Joker in the upcoming Batman film, "The Dark Knight."
The NY Times (http://cityroom.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/01/22/actor-heath-ledger-is-found-dead/index.html?hp) is reporting a masseuse arrived at his apartment and was let in the door by a housekeeper, who then knocked on the door of Mr. Ledger's bedroom. When no one answered, the housekeeper and the masseuse opened the bedroom door and found Mr. Ledger unconscious. They attempted to wake him, and when they couldn't they called 911.
We're told when paramedics responded, the actor was in full cardiac arrest. They attempted to perform CPR on him, but were unsuccessful. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Gordon Hinckley, President of the Mormon Church, died today at the age 97.
I took him off my list at the last minute to make my stepbrother happy.
I submitted 11 names, with Gordon B. Hinckley as my alternate, because I didn't have time to make sure everyone was still alive.

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- A senior al Qaeda terrorist who allegedly plotted and carried out attacks against U.S. and coalition forces was killed in Pakistan, a knowledgeable Western official and a military source told CNN Thursday.
He was identified as Abu Laith al-Libi, 41, who was on the military's most wanted list.

Any person identified as a "senior al Qaeda terrorist" would have been a potential candidate for the list. Along with any leader or political figure of a county in the Middle East.
But like the trainwreck picks, just which one to pick is the hard question to answer.
