It's amazing how a day can go from the highest of highs to the lowest of lows. Less than 2 hours before Scott Kalitta's crash, I was witness to the wedding of my best friend to her college sweetheart and was blissfully unaware of the events unfolding ~200 miles away until I returned to her parents' home at the end of the night and caught the TV coverage. As a big NHRA fan, whenever one of the racers is killed, it hurts whether I knew him or her personally or not. I taped the 2 early qualifying shows in hopes of capturing a new Pro Stock Bike record as happened in E-town last year, but I now wonder if instead I have a live recording of the crash.
For the past 3 years, I've been to the event in Maple Grove, and were it not for the wedding and crazy gas prices I may have attended E-town this season as well. Sometimes fate works in mysterious ways because for as bad as the crash looked on TV, witnessing it live must have been incomprehensible and not something I ever wish to see at a race I attend (or any race, period).

Rest in peace, Scott and God speed. May you be racing up there with Eric Medlen, Darrell Russell, Scott Geoffrion, Shelly Howard, and the other NHRA racers who've left us too soon.

Someone mentioned in the George Carlin tribute thread that things tend to happen in threes. With Carlin and Tim Russert, we have two-thirds of a triumvirate of talkers who have passed suddenly via heart attack/disease. Who's the third member of this group?

FYI, nobody picked him. I'm definitely seeing a theme of big names that nobody has picked.

KsherHomey
June 23rd, 2008, 01:58 PM
Jay, I bet most of us are missing some of the big names because we are only limited to picking 10 names.

If you had a chance to pick 15 names I bet we would have more people scoring.

Jay

Jay, I bet most of us are missing some of the big names because we are only limited to picking 10 names.I don't mean that people aren't getting points. I mean that many of the big names that have died recently weren't picked by anybody at all. Nobody picked George Carlin; nobody picked Cyd Charisse; nobody picked Bo Diddly or Harvey Korman. We have about 50 people playing, representing a diversity of ages and backgrounds. You'd think that someone in that group would have thought of at least one of these people.

Les Crane, talk-show host, died at age 74. I honestly thought he was a lot older than that.

He started out in San Francisco doing Live from the hungry i, and was tapped by ABC to do a national show in 1964, interviewing major figures of the day, and with sidekick Nipsey Russell.

What I didn't know or remember about Crane was that he won a Grammy for the spoken word recording "Desiderata" (anyone ever see the movie "Love Serenade"?). He also made a fortune in computer software, starting in 1984 with sales of "Chessmaster" and "Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing".

He was married to Tina Louise, best know as Ginger on Gilligan's Island, for about 5 years.

Quite an interesting life. If you don't recognize anything about this man's life, you are very young. ;)

From CNN.com (and dated July 15):

LOS ANGELES, California (AP) -- Charles Joffe, the longtime Woody Allen producer who snagged a best picture Oscar for the filmmaker's famed comedy "Annie Hall," has died. He was 78.

Joffe died Wednesday at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center after a long battle with lung disease, his separated wife, Carol Joffe, said.

Born in New York City, Charles Joffe studied journalism at Syracuse University before becoming a junior agent at MCA, Carol Joffe said.

He worked for Jack Rollins in the 1950s as a junior manager working with comedians. In the 1960s, the pair partnered to form Rollins and Joffe Productions, and developed the likes of Robin Williams, Billy Crystal, Dick Cavett and Allen, Carol Joffe said.

Charles Joffe moved to Los Angeles in 1972, while Rollins stayed in New York, she said.

Rollins and Joffe eventually moved on to different projects but have both been producing Allen's (http://topics.cnn.com/topics/woody_allen) films since "Take the Money and Run" in 1969. Joffe picked up a trophy for best picture in 1977 when "Annie Hall" landed four Oscars.

Actually, I am thoroughly convinced that North Dakota is God's Country. And I have proof!!!

This looks better on pen and paper, but I will explain it to you.

The area code for the entire state of ND is 701.

When a person writes their area code down, they generally put a parentheses around the area code.

If you look at 701 with parentheses, you can clearly see that it spells God.

(701)

So there it is. :D

BTW, I got to spend two days last week with Senator Chuck Hagel from Nebraska. I really enjoyed his company. We had a great time together.

What does Patrick Swayze have?

I've had two relatives die from this disease. Pancreatic Cancer, one of the worst kinds, usually fatal within months of prognosis.

From a web site dedicated to the disease:

Survival Rates
According to the American Cancer Society, for all stages of pancreatic cancer combined, the one-year relative survival rate is 20%, and the five-year rate is 4%. These low survival rates are attributable to the fact that fewer than 10% of patients' tumors are confined to the pancreas at the time of diagnosis; in most cases, the malignancy has already progressed to the point where surgical removal is impossible.

In those cases where resection can be performed, the average survival rate is 18 to 20 months. The overall five-year survival rate is about 10%, although this can rise as high as 20% to 25% if the tumor is removed completely and when cancer has not spread to lymph nodes.

My grandmother died from pancreatic cancer. It was horrible and painful for her. Then last month a former co-worker was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. At first they were hopeful, but very soon they discovered it wasn't confined to the pancreas. By the time his was diagnosed, it had spread to the liver and his prognosis is very poor. I hope his remaining time is as pain free as possible. And I hope the same for Patrick Swayze as well.

nothing. Patrick Swayze is just fine. the picture of health. no need to put him on your list next year. :D

please know that i am fully-aware of the pain and misery associated with pancreatic cancer and other maladies. we play this game as if those who die do so for our benefit. it's as if we are removed from the situation. but these people suffer, they die and they have family and loved ones who grieve, just as we grieve for Uncle Fred or Aunt Betty. some people think Dead Pools are sick and i respect that. myself, i think they're a nice diversion. don't hate me for that.

Hollywood stuntwoman Hazel Warp dies at 93

BOZEMAN, Mont. (AP) - Hazel Warp, who was Vivien Leigh's stunt double in "Gone With the Wind," has died. She was 93.
A spokeswoman at Evergreen Healthcare in Livingston confirmed Friday that Warp died Tuesday at Livingston Memorial Hospital. A cause of death wasn't released.
Warp, who rode and trained horses, was a stand-in for Leigh in all the horseback-riding scenes in the 1939 movie. She also took a fall for Leigh, tumbling down the stairs of Tara in the famous scene near the end of the film when Scarlett O'Hara reaches out to slap Rhett Butler, loses her balance and falls.
"I never will forget it," Warp said of her Hollywood work in a 2005 interview with the Bozeman Daily Chronicle. "I liked it, everything about it. I just liked my work."
Warp also appeared in "Wuthering Heights,""Ben-Hur" and "National Velvet," among other films.

I have a radio on in the house most of the day. Good news station, usually. And the Newman story was the first thing I heard this morning. And I think at least one person had Newman in the pool, too.

As for the previous three, all obits were in the local paper the other day.

I just try stay alert and pay attention, which isn't as easy as it sounds.

Anyway, losing Paul Newman is a real bummer. I had assumed he was immortal. Which is the beauty of films, where he will always be with us.

Nominees and winners need not have been picked by anyone in the Dead Pool. Are you referring to the person we are happiest to see dead, or the best manner of dying, or what?I think you just came up with 2 categories there :)Hee hee. Good points. "Biggest Loss" is a bit broad. How about this restructure: "Lifetime Achievement" for the person who accomplished the most. "Thoroughly Used Up" for the person who lived the fullest life (not necessarily the same as Lifetime Achievement). "Good Riddance" for the person who we're most happy to see gone. "Went Too Soon" for the person who had the most left to accomplish or most promising person who died.Per the best manner of dying, perhaps we could have "Most Unique Death"? I'd like to see these awards be fun, but respectful. :)

Some more ideas: "End of an Era" for the person who was the last of their breed. And some for the living: "Holding On" for the person who looks like they are going to live forever, and "Cheater" for the person who should have died from something but didn't.

I've had my 2009 list going since about January, my one rule being I won't use everyone else's lists to include people I forgot. Plus, I figure if they make it to 2009, they weren't good picks anyway, and since 80% of my 2008 list is still here, I didn't make good picks either.

I hope I don't forget to play this year. Last year I didn't even think about it till the end of January.

A point of clarification. What if you have someone in your pool that is declared dead, and are then revived with the paddles? (clear...zap!)

Do you still get a point? How about 1/2 a point? What if that person says in an interview later that they saw "a white light", and were walking towards it when they were revived? You oughta get something.
